No, Marilyn Monroe wasn’t Spanish. Even if she had learned and could speak Spanish, she didn’t have Spanish descent. She was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926,  at Los Angeles County Hospital in Los Angeles, California, to 26-year-old Gladys Baker. When Marilyn was only two weeks old, she was placed in foster care, but Gladys continued to see her over the years. Additionally, she made an effort to obtain full custody of her daughter but was given a schizophrenia diagnosis and suffered from the symptoms of the mental illness.

Her mother, Gladys, was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, to a working-class family from the Midwest who had moved to California at the turn of the century. Nobody knew the identity of Marilyn’s father for a very long time. However, she eventually had clue about her father.

According to Charles Casillo‘s book, Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon, it is unclear exactly what Marilyn knew, although at one point she was able to find her father. According to the book, when Marilyn called Charles Stanley Gifford to introduce herself, he replied, “I’m married, and I have a family. I don’t have anything to say to you. Call my lawyer.”

According to Biography, Gladys once revealed to Marilyn that Charles Stanley Gifford, her father, was a coworker and her superior at RKO Studios. Gladys became pregnant when she was working for Charles. However, according to Marca, Martin Edward Mortensen, Gladys’ former husband, was named as Marilyn’s father on her birth certificate.

A DNA test on a strand of Marilyn Monroe’s hair and a cheek swab from one of Charles’ great-grandchildren was done in 2022, and the results showed that Charles really was Marilyn’s father. According to Ancestry.com, Charles Stanley Gifford was born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1898, and he died in 1965. Hence, she was not Spanish as both of her parents were not Spanish and didn’t have Spanish descent. Now, let’s talk about her early days.

The young Norma was placed in foster care because her mother had mental health issues. Monroe became a state ward, and her mother’s friend, Grace Goddard, took charge of her and her mother’s affairs. In the following four years, Monroe’s home underwent numerous changes.

She continued to live with the Atkinsons for the first 16 months and may have experienced sexual abuse during this time. She spent a short time with Grace and her husband, Erwin “Doc” Goddard, and two other families in the summer of 1935. Grace placed her in the Los Angeles Orphans Home in September 1935. Although her friends praised the orphanage as a superb facility, Monroe nevertheless felt abandoned.

Marilyn Monroe’s legal guardian, Grace, was appointed in 1936 after being convinced by the orphanage staff that she would be happier living in a family. However, Grace did not take away Monroe from the orphanage until the summer of 1937. Because Doc sexually abused Monroe, her second stay with the Goddards only lasted a few months. After that, she briefly lived in Compton and Los Angeles with Grace’s friends and family.

In September 1938, Monroe moved into a more long-term home when she started residing with Grace’s aunt Ana Lower on Sawtelle’s west side. She attended weekly Christian Science services with Lower while attending Emerson Junior High School. She was an average student overall, but she excelled in writing and wrote for the school newspaper. Around the beginning of 1941, Monroe moved back in with the Goddards in Van Nuys because of the elderly Lower’s health issues.

Marilyn Monroe started going to Van Nuys High School in the same year. The company Doc Goddard worked for transferred him to West Virginia in 1942. Monroe was unable to leave California due to child protection rules, and she was forced to go back to the orphanage. She found a solution by getting married to James Dougherty, a factory worker, on June 19, 1942, just a few days after she turned 16.

Monroe later quit high school and settled down to be a housewife. Dougherty and she didn’t get along, and she later claimed that she was dying of boredom during the marriage. When Dougherty joined the Merchant Marine in 1943, Monroe relocated with him to Santa Catalina Island where he was stationed.
